Traditional chandeliers in our houses are now replaced by LED chandeliers. Almost every corner of street, LED chandeliers begin to decorate showcases. In addition to the modern appearance, LED chandeliers resolve the problem of bulbs. LEDs are durable light sources that last up to 5, 10 or even 20 years. So, are LED chandeliers durable that much, too?

Basically, a LED chandelier consists of 3 or 4 parts. The first one is the chandelier body, the second is the LED light source, and the third one is the power supply that provides constant current or constant voltage to operate the LEDs. This power supply reduces the 220V voltage to operate the LEDs with the appropriate voltage, and prevents damage to LED’s by limiting the current. The fourth part is the milk white coloured diffuser panel placed in front of the LEDs. Some of these panels are used in some luminaires, and also are not used in other luminaires. The aim is to distribute the light softly, without straining the eyes. On some chandeliers, crystal stones are used instead of diffuser panels.

LEDs are known to have a lifespan of up to 50,000 or 60,000 hours. This information is correct. However, this lifespan is only valid if the conditions specified by the producer. For example; a LED producer indicates that the product has a lifespan of 50,000 hours when LEDs are supplied with 500mA current and the temperature is below 85 degrees. And also LED producer publishes that with a test report called LM-80. Only a small number of LED producers have this report.

Even though LEDs are light sources that have long lifespan, when LEDs in a system, their lifespan can be shorter than expected. The most two common problems of LED chandeliers are; malfunction of the electronic driver part and malfunction of LEDs due to overheating.

There are thousands of LED chandeliers imported from China in the market. Sellers guarantee up to one year. But no one can guess what will happen after one year.

When you buy a LED chandelier, you should try to learn the technical details and do not only look for elegant appearance of the chandelier. Because when the LED part of the chandelier breaks down, the repair of this part is not as easy as changing a bulb. You may need professional support in case of malfunction, and this repair can be very costly.

The heating problem in LED chandeliers is the first thing to pay attention to. Checking the temperature of the LED chandelier at the end of one hour will be useful to avoid problems in the future.

Even if the overheated LEDs do not break down, at the end of a particular period of use, the quantity of light will decline. For example; you can experience 30% light loss at the end of 1 year, and 50% light at the end of 2 years. Because the decline in this light output can be slowly, it is not easy to notice.

Of course, the perception of “every product produced in China is poor-quality” is wrong. However, the low price expectation in the market leads to get poor-quality products in our country by importation. Poor-quality LED chandeliers can become partially or completely unusable in one or two years. That is why consumers need to prefer known or reliable sellers that will provide a long guarantee period (3 or 5 years).
